After seeing Facebook posts about local CASAs, I became interested in working with children in the system. I felt it would be a way for me to put my skills to good use. Once I was trained, I took on the case of a 17-year-old girl from Puerto Rico whose father abandoned her at a shelter. She was attending a local high school with limited language resources and had to deal with bullying due to the language barrier. Working with her, we were able to get her enrolled in a good online learning platform with an ESL component, which helped her improve her language skills. She’s now excelling in her classes and her foster parents have gotten permanent custody. As someone who cares deeply about helping children in the foster care system, I believe it’s important to raise awareness about CASA and its impact. More and more children enter the system every day, and we need more people with language abilities to help them. My goal is to work with my supervisor to find more Latina and Spanishspeaking volunteers to help make a difference in the lives of these children. For me, working with CASA is like planting a seed that can grow into something meaningful. I hope to leave a positive impact on the children I work with, and I believe that supporting CASA is a powerful way to do that.
CAMBIAR LA HISTORIA DE UN NIÑO
Después de ver publicaciones en Facebook sobre CASAs locales, me interesé en trabajar con niños en el sistema. Sentí que sería una forma de poner mis habilidades en buen uso. Una vez que terminé mi entrenamiento, asumí el caso de una joven de 17 años de Puerto Rico cuyo padre la abandonó en un refugio. Asistía a una escuela secundaria local con recursos lingüísticos limitados y tenía que lidiar con el acoso debido a la barrera del idioma. Trabajando con ella, pudimos inscribirla en una buena plataforma de aprendizaje en línea con un componente de ESL, lo que ayudó a mejorar sus habilidades lingüísticas. Ahora sobresale en sus clases y sus padres adoptivos han obtenido la custodia permanente. Como alguien que se preocupa profundamente por ayudar a los niños en el sistema de cuidado de crianza, creo que es importante crear conciencia sobre CASA y su impacto. Cada día más y más niños entran al sistema, y necesitamos más personas con habilidades lingüísticas para ayudarlos. Mi objetivo es trabajar con mi supervisor para encontrar más latinas y voluntarios que hablen español para ayudar a hacer una diferencia en las vidas de estos niños Para mí, trabajar con CASA es como plantar una semilla que puede crecer en algo significativo. Espero dejar un impacto positivo en los niños con los que trabajo, y creo que apoyar a CASA es una forma poderosa de hacerlo
