Volunteer Therapists Make Therapy Accessible to Teens Exiting Foster Care

Older foster youth — or those who have aged out of foster care without a permanent home — deserve access to mental health services, regardless of their ability to pay.

That belief is the foundation of our Youth In Transition Counseling Program.

“There is a tremendous need for accessible, affordable, and flexible mental health services for youth exiting foster care without stable family relationships,” said Nancy McCullar, Executive Director of CASA Berks County. “Far too many foster children age out of the system without being connected to a permanent, supportive family. Many face homelessness and uncertainty. The Youth In Transition Counseling Program aims to bridge that gap by connecting volunteer therapists with young people needing guidance and support.”

We invite therapists to reserve one slot in their caseload for teletherapy sessions with foster youth. Retired and semi-retired therapists are also encouraged to return to practice by dedicating time to one or two young clients.

“Becoming a pro bono therapist reconnects you with the passion that inspired you to pursue this work.”

The Youth In Transition Counseling Project is seeking clinicians of all genders and racial backgrounds to engage in the meaningful work of counseling young people who are currently in — or have aged out of — foster care. Volunteer clinicians must hold their own malpractice insurance, possess a valid Pennsylvania license, and have the capability to provide secure teletherapy.

Our volunteer therapists commit to offering teletherapy sessions to help clients manage stress, anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, and relationship challenges. Therapists have the flexibility to determine the number of clients they accept and to set their own schedules for appointments.

To ensure the best possible outcomes, all individuals seeking care are screened by a care coordinator during intake to assess their readiness and ability to participate in teletherapy. The Youth In Transition Counseling Project matches only those foster youth or former foster youth who can engage in insight-oriented counseling.
