Four New CASA Volunteers Sworn In by Judge Boyd to Advocate for Children in Foster Care

four new child advocates sworn in may 13, 2025

On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, four dedicated community members were officially sworn in as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) by the Honorable Judge Boyd of the Berks County Court of Common Pleas. These volunteers have completed extensive training and are now authorized to serve as advocates for children who have experienced abuse or neglect and are navigating the child welfare and foster care systems.

The swearing-in ceremony marks a significant milestone for the new advocates—and for the children whose lives they will help shape. Each CASA volunteer is appointed to represent the best interests of a child in court and to serve as a stable, consistent adult presence during what is often a turbulent time.

The four new CASA volunteers bring diverse life experiences, professional expertise, and deep compassion to their roles:

Alison Burke is a mother of five, a passionate real estate agent, and a part-time adjunct in higher education with a master’s degree in education. She is driven by a desire to give back and build meaningful relationships. Alison believes that through CASA, she can provide the support children need to feel safe and empowered to thrive.

Shelly Mieczkowski is a retired educator with 41 years of service in the Daniel Boone Area School District, including roles as a special education teacher and administrator. Shelly, who lives in Oley, PA, is eager to continue her lifelong commitment to children by providing consistency and care as a CASA volunteer.

Lisa Sohn, a Certified Pharmacy Technician with over four decades of experience, volunteers with the Olivet Boys & Girls Club and the Girl Scouts. With a deep interest in building relationships and offering steady support, Lisa is excited to extend her volunteerism to advocating for children in foster care.

Hope Manion is a Senior Director at WTW with a background in actuarial science and a strong track record in advocacy. Living in Hereford, PA, with her family, Hope brings leadership, analytical insight, and a heart for community service. She looks forward to helping youth grow, mature, and access the tools they need to succeed.

CASA of Berks County is proud to welcome these outstanding individuals to its team of trained volunteers. With their addition, CASA continues to expand its reach and impact, ensuring more children in Berks County have a voice in court and a dedicated adult looking out for their well-being.
